Awareness
Stop killing seafarers
Right now, seafarers are being killed in the Black Sea and around the Strait of Hormuz. They are civilians on ships carrying grain, coal and fuel — and outside this industry, almost no one is talking about it.
The numbers
Every figure is tied to its source and to the period it covers. These numbers move quickly, so they are not a running total — they are what was verified on a given date.
What is happening
The Black Sea
On 19 July 2026, off Odesa, the grain-laden Golden Leo was struck by cruise missiles; ten people on board lost their lives and the ship sank a week later. Three days on, the Turkish-flagged Reyhan Sarı, carrying coal from Russia to Türkiye, was hit in a drone attack: one seafarer from the engine department was killed and three others were injured. The ship reached Trabzon under her own power.
The Strait of Hormuz
Between 28 February and 11 June 2026, IMO verified 46 attacks on commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz; 14 seafarers lost their lives in that same period. Fatal incidents continued through July. Around 20,000 seafarers across the region are affected, on ships and in ports.
What they have in common
These ships were carrying grain, coal and fuel. Their crew lists read India, Syria, Türkiye, Egypt, Ukraine, the Philippines. Different seas, different parties, the same outcome: people who belong to no one’s war are losing their lives while doing their jobs. BIMCO, ICS, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO have jointly called for attacks on commercial vessels to stop. This page exists to carry that call outside the industry.
