J-Ocean Heavy Industries has signed a memorandum of understanding with telecommunications company Ucast to build a smart shipyard at the Gunsan Shipyard in South Korea, according to a report by Smart Maritime Network. The initiative will draw on private 5G, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and robotics technologies.
J-Ocean, established by Eco Prime Marine Pacific to acquire the Gunsan Shipyard, will supply demonstration sites, field equipment, operational data, and shipyard-specific scenarios to support the project. Ucast, for its part, will develop the overall master plan.
Digital Twin, IoT and Paperless Workflows
Under the agreement, Ucast’s plan includes rolling out a private 5G wireless network alongside a 3D digital twin platform intended to give real-time monitoring of shipyard assets and processes. IoT sensor networks are planned for equipment such as cranes and vessel blocks, supported by a paperless work and process management system aimed at streamlining shipyard operations.
Safety Monitoring and Automation
The partners also intend to develop an integrated safety monitoring system combining AI-enabled CCTV with gas and environmental IoT sensors for confined spaces, with the goal of reducing the risk of industrial accidents.
Beyond monitoring, the project will explore so-called physical AI applications, involving industrial and collaborative robots together with autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). These technologies could be used to automate tasks such as welding, painting, and material transport across the shipyard.

An official from J-Ocean Heavy Industries described the agreement as “a symbolic step forward in integrating cutting-edge private 5G and physical AI technologies into Gunsan Shipyard,” adding that combining Ucast’s technological capabilities with the shipyard’s operations would help “accelerate the digital transformation” of its processes and establish what the official called a next-generation shipyard standard.
The MoU reflects a broader trend among shipyards toward digitalization, as builders look to combine connectivity, automation, and data platforms to improve productivity and safety in production environments. Details on implementation timelines and investment figures for the Gunsan project have not been disclosed.
