ABB to Supply Power Package for Allseas' Grand Tour HTV

ABB Contract for Offshore Wind Logistics Vessel
ABB has won a contract from Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) to supply an integrated power and propulsion package for the semi-submersible heavy transport vessel (HTV) Grand Tour, according to a report by gCaptain. The 230-meter vessel has been ordered by offshore contractor Allseas and is intended to serve as a logistics link supporting Europe’s offshore wind sector.
Upon delivery in 2028, Grand Tour will transport very large converter stations from fabrication yards in Asia and Europe, transferring them directly to Allseas’ construction vessel Pioneering Spirit for installation. Converter stations convert AC electricity generated by offshore turbines into DC power for long-distance transmission to shore via subsea cable.
Design and Propulsion Requirements
Grand Tour is designed to carry loads of up to 40,000 metric tons on its stern deck. To load converter stations, the vessel positions itself alongside Pioneering Spirit and lowers its main deck below the waterline, floating the units directly onboard. This operation demands precise power, control and maneuverability.
ABB’s scope includes four 3.5MW nozzled Azipod units, which will provide the thrust needed for the vessel’s bollard pull and dynamic positioning requirements. The 360-degree rotating Azipod units are intended to support accurate maneuvering into position at the bow of Pioneering Spirit, with optimized nozzles aimed at maintaining efficiency during transit as well.
According to ABB, the gearless Azipod design reduces mechanical losses and fuel consumption compared with conventional mechanical thrusters, while also lowering noise and vibration. The gearless configuration is also said to reduce lubrication oil requirements, which can lower maintenance needs and operating costs. ABB describes the technology’s compact footprint as offering design flexibility and easier installation.
Full Power Package
The complete ABB package includes a medium-voltage AC power plant arranged in a closed ring topology, managed by ABB’s PEMS power and energy management system alongside an enhanced power plant protection system (EPPS). The powertrain solution also comes with remote condition monitoring and maintenance capabilities.
GSI President Zhou Xuhui said the Grand Tour project reflects the shipyard’s capability to deliver complex vessels and continues its collaboration with ABB. Rune Braastad, President of ABB’s Marine & Ports division, said the project shows how integrated power and propulsion systems can support leaner, more efficient offshore heavy-lift operations while opening new market opportunities.
