Partnership Targets Autonomy and Shipyard Automation

Saronic and South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have announced a strategic partnership to accelerate autonomous maritime systems while supporting the rebuilding of the U.S. shipbuilding industrial base. According to a report by gCaptain, also covered by Maritime Executive, the agreement was unveiled at the launch of the Korea–U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center (KUSPC) in Washington, D.C.

The deal pairs Saronic’s autonomous surface vessel technology with SHI’s long-standing commercial shipbuilding and manufacturing experience. The companies said they intend to collaborate on autonomy-capable vessels for government and commercial customers, while jointly exploring AI-powered digital tools, robotics-based production automation, and next-generation shipyard processes.

Executive Statements

Saronic co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas said the effort would focus on “accelerating the reindustrialization of American shipbuilding, training the workforce of the future,” and delivering autonomy-capable vessels. SHI Vice Chairman and CEO Sung An Choi said the partnership brings together complementary strengths in shipbuilding and maritime autonomy to help build a more competitive future.

Expanding U.S. Manufacturing Footprint

The announcement follows Saronic’s recent selection of Brownsville, Texas, as the site for its planned $3 billion Port Alpha shipyard. The facility, expected to start construction this year and open in 2028, will sit on an initial 835-acre site at the Port of Brownsville and could eventually build vessels exceeding 1,200 feet in length while creating up to 10,000 direct jobs over a decade.

The Samsung collaboration also extends to production infrastructure, with plans to explore robotics-based automation at Saronic’s shipyards, including the new Texas site and its Franklin, Louisiana facility. Saronic is separately investing $300 million to expand the Louisiana yard following its acquisition of Gulf Craft last year.

SHI’s advanced-vessel work is not limited to autonomy: the shipbuilder is also the hull design partner behind ABS’s Approval in Principle for a 15,000 TEU nuclear-powered container ship concept, developed with South Korea’s KAERI and KRISO.

Broader Policy Context

The KUSPC initiative is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce and South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, aiming to deepen cooperation between the two nations’ maritime industries. The partnership also aligns with wider U.S. government efforts to revitalize domestic shipbuilding through investment in advanced manufacturing, workforce development, and next-generation vessel technology.

Saronic has recently gained visibility as its Corsair autonomous surface vessel entered operational military service, which U.S. Central Command described as involved in recent naval operations.

Apeks view — Ambitious industrial partnerships like this are easy to announce and hard to verify — what matters over the next few years is whether the workforce training, robotics automation, and autonomy-capable vessels actually materialize on the yard floor, not just in press releases. Owners and technical managers watching U.S. shipbuilding capacity rebuild should look for concrete milestones — hulls laid, systems certified, jobs filled — rather than treating statements of intent as delivered capability.
