Port Alpha Set for Brownsville
Saronic has chosen Brownsville, Texas as the site of a new $3 billion shipyard called Port Alpha, dedicated to building autonomous maritime systems and software-defined vessels. According to a report by Smart Maritime Network, also covered by Maritime Executive, construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with operations targeted to start in 2028.
Scale and Expansion Plans
The facility will initially cover almost 340 hectares at the Port of Brownsville, with room to expand to nearly 1,800 hectares. At full build-out, the yard is intended to produce vessels up to 260 metres in length, with future phases potentially supporting ships exceeding 365 metres, supported by multimodal logistics infrastructure and deepwater waterfront access.
Company Statement
Dino Mavrookas, Co-Founder and CEO of Saronic, framed the project in terms of restoring national shipbuilding capacity. “America’s maritime future depends on our ability to build again,” he said, adding that Port Alpha aims to deliver ships “at a speed and scale not seen since World War II.” He described the investment as extending beyond a physical shipyard to rebuilding industrial capacity, workforce, and manufacturing capability.
Workforce Development
Saronic said it plans to work with Texas educational institutions and technical colleges to set up workforce training and apprenticeship programmes, with the aim of positioning South Texas as a hub for advanced maritime manufacturing.
Building on Louisiana Operations
The Texas project follows Saronic’s early-2025 acquisition of a shipyard in Franklin, Louisiana, where the company is investing $300 million to expand capacity by 2.8 hectares. That facility continues to build Saronic’s 55-metre Marauder autonomous vessel, giving the company a second, larger production base focused on autonomous and software-defined shipbuilding as it scales up operations in the Gulf Coast region.
Apeks view — A $3 billion yard and a 2028 target are announcements, not delivered capability yet — worth tracking, not banking on. For owners and technical managers, the real test will be whether software-defined, autonomous vessels arrive with the documentation, class approvals, and operational evidence to back specification claims. Scale ambitions are easy to state; what matters is whether build quality, maintenance history, and performance data are captured and verifiable as these ships actually enter service, not assumed from press statements.
