Repsol Delivers First Bioethanol Bunkering to Maersk Ship

Repsol supplied 2,800 tons of bioethanol to Maersk's Antonia Maersk in Barcelona, marking a Mediterranean first for alcohol-based marine fuel.

First Bioethanol Bunkering in Barcelona

Repsol has completed the supply of 2,800 tons of bioethanol to the Maersk container vessel Antonia Maersk, in what the company describes as the first such bunkering operation in the Port of Barcelona and among the earliest in the Mediterranean. According to a release from Repsol carried by Maritime Executive, the operation is intended to show that infrastructure, logistics, and operational capacity now exist to support alcohol-based marine fuels at commercial scale.

Repsol said the delivery also signals readiness across the wider value chain to support other alcohol-based fuels, including methanol, as part of what it calls a multi-energy strategy combining conventional, renewable, and low-carbon fuel options for shipping customers.

Zero-Emission Delivery Vessel

The bunkering was carried out by Bahía Candela, described as Repsol’s newest bunker vessel, operated by Mureloil and built to handle both conventional and next-generation marine fuels. During the transfer, Bahía Candela ran on its battery system, allowing the operation to be completed with zero local emissions.

Owners weighing alcohol-based fuels need repeatable evidence — consistent quality, delivery timing, safe handling procedures across multiple calls — before treating any port as fuel-ready. Claims of value-chain readiness are easy to state and harder to demonstrate at scale. The zero-emission delivery detail is a nice operational touch, but the real test is whether this becomes routine, documented practice rather than a one-off announcement.
