New Venture Targets Fragmented Fuel Transition Services

Sweden-based Soya Group has launched FLOW Maritime, a new company designed to help shipowners manage the move toward alternative marine fuels. According to an update from Ship & Bunker, the company will combine alternative fuel portfolio management, certified chain-of-custody services, FuelEU pooling and environmental attributes under one roof—areas that have traditionally been handled by separate providers.

Looking Beyond Fuel Price

FLOW Maritime’s stated goal is to help shipowners evaluate the full commercial picture of switching fuels, rather than focusing solely on price at the pump. Daniel Gent, managing director of FLOW Maritime, said shipping companies face mounting pressure to cut emissions, but that the business case is often evaluated too narrowly.

“The price of the fuel is only one part of the equation,” Gent said, adding that factoring in compliance value, emissions reductions and environmental attributes together can change the overall economics significantly.

Certification and Traceability at the Core

The company said certification, traceability and documented chain-of-custody processes will underpin its service offering, giving customers a way to verify environmental claims tied to the fuels they purchase. This is intended to address a recurring industry concern: that claims about emissions reductions or fuel sustainability can be difficult to substantiate without robust documentation.

Part of a Broader Group

FLOW Maritime operates within Soya Group, a family-owned business with background in shipping and maritime business development. The launch comes as shipowners continue to weigh a widening menu of alternative fuel options and compliance mechanisms, including FuelEU Maritime pooling arrangements, against operational and commercial pressures.

By consolidating fuel sourcing, regulatory compliance support and environmental certification into a single service, FLOW Maritime is positioning itself to address what it describes as a gap in how shipowners currently assess the economics of the energy transition.
